My Analysis of the Ridgid RD80905 Pressure Washer
The Ridgid RD80905 pressure washer is built to last with high quality parts and it will save you time when power washing your deck because it pumps out so much power.
The engine and the pump are what really make a gas pressure washer. Often when you’re out looking for the best machine you have to compromise on one or the other; go for the better pump over the engine or vice versa. In the case of the Ridgid RD80905 you get the best of both worlds; an excellent pump and a stellar engine. The RD80905 is more expensive than the other models I’ve looked at and researched for this site, but it is in my opinion the highest quality machine out there. It’s really a commercial pressure washer that can be purchased and used by the average homeowner. If you have tough stains on your deck or you just want to dramatically speed up your power washing so you can have more time with your family, then the RD80905 is the way to go.
Here are some of the things that really stand out about this fantastic machine.
You’ll Have More Than Enough Power to Get The Job Done
At 3,300 psi, the Ridgid RD80905 really puts out some power. Combine that with a 3.0 gpm number and you really have a lot of cleaning power behind this machine. To help you understand what this means a little better, psi stands for pounds per square inch. It is a measure of how much pressure a washer can put out. The higher the pressure, the more powerful the machine. 3,300 psi is more than enough pressure to handle the toughest of stains and even strip paint. For more delicate jobs like cleaning the siding on your home, you’ll need to use one of the wider angle spray nozzles that come with the Ridgid RD80905.
Gpm is gallons per minute and is a measure of how much water flows out of the washer. A higher gpm number means that a washer is able to clean faster. Each 1 gpm bump up results in about a 40% increase in cleaning speed. So if you’ve been using a power washer that has a gpm of 2.0, with psi and all other things consistent, and it takes you about 3 hours to pressure wash your deck and walkway, then moving to a machine that has a psi of 3.0 you can finish the same deck in about an hour and 45 minutes. That’s a big time saver and well worth the upgrade in my opinion. At 3.0 gpm, the Ridgid RD8095 is one of the higher gpm machines that I’ve found in my research.
The last measure of power that I like to look at when comparing pressure washers is cu or cleaning units. It is psi time gpm, which in the case of the Ridgid pressure washer comes to 9,900 cu. This is really high for a pressure washer and this machine can easily handle any residential jobs and is well suited for a commercial power washing business.
The Pump is the Best of the Best
The Ridgid RD80905 comes with a CAT Triplex plunger pump with ceramic pistons. CAT pumps are the top on the line as a far as pressure washer pumps go. There are highly energy efficient, durable, and have a very long life. No plastic or cheap parts in this pump, only the best, most durable materials. The RD80905 pump is considered commercial grade and designed to stand up really well in frequent usage situations, where you expect to be using the machine a lot of the year. CAT pumps will last over 1,000 hours before they need to be serviced. Most parts of the pump can also be easily repaired.
The pump is also equipped with a thermal release valve that helps to prevent water temperatures in the pump from reaching levels that would be harmful and cause damage. The valve will release a small amount of water and then reset itself when the water has cooled.
The Nozzle Tips Are Easy to Use and Ideal For Any Situation
The RD80905 has dual power soap nozzle for adding detergent out to 30 feet, and 4 contractor grade quick connect nozzle tips. The soap nozzle can be used both short and long range by pulling or pushing the nozzle tip. The tips all snap in easily to the end of the trigger handle, which has a lockout safety feature to prevent someone from accidently pulling the trigger.
You get a zero degree red nozzle that produces a pencil thin spray that should only be used for extreme stains. You also get a 15 degree yellow nozzle that can be used liked a scraper for removing grease and dirt from driveways and patios. The 25 degree green tip is less severe and can be used to clean wider areas like your deck. The 40 degree white nozzle tip is best for easy jobs like cleaning your car or softwood siding on your home. All of the nozzles fit into a nice spring clip holder on the wand for easy access and storage.
This video talks about some of the features of the Ridgid pressure washer.
The High Quality Subaru Engine Is Built To Last
The Subaru EX21fi overhead valve electronic fuel injection engine is designed with the latest technology to increase motor efficiency and performance. It has many patent pending components and features built into it. This 7 horsepower engine is really the top of the line as far as pressure washer engines go. EX engines are designed by Subaru Robin to start instantly on the first pull. They are made with high quality parts including an aluminum alloy casted piston. The cast iron cylinder liners inside the piston as well as many other design elements help to prolong engine life and increase durability.
The engine is also designed with fuel efficiency and lower emissions in mind. It is CARB compliant which means it has net the stringent low emission requirement of the state of California. This is a big plus and something you don’t see on many pressure washer engines.
The Ridgid is Highly Mobile and Easy To Store
There are big tires on the Ridgid power washer, 12 inches by 3 inches with steel rims. The tires as well as the easy grip handle make it very easy to roll around. In addition there is a crane lifting hook in the middle of the machine that works great with a cherry picker or mini-crane that you may have the back of your pickup.
Also the handle will fold down when you are ready to store the machine away, which is a nice feature. There is also a little accessory compartment at the front of the machine where you can conveniently store a few things.

The Good
- Ergonomic grip on the trigger handle – There is a molded grip on the RD80905 which is really nice to hold onto, plus an adjustable handle that moves around as you need it to. It is also removable. This is a really nice feature. I know from experience that holding a pressure washer trigger gun for long periods of time can really be a strain on you and this type of design can really help alleviate that.
- Pump – As I talk about above, the pump on this baby is top notch and will last you a long time.
- Long pressure hose – the hose runs 30 feet, which is very long. You won’t have to worry about moving the base of the washer around very much with a hose this long.
- 3 year warranty – This is a nice long warranty. Most manufacturers will only offer a 1 year warranty.
- CARB compliant – CARB stands for California Air Resources Board. They have strict emission requirements for all gas engine sold and used in California. If products do not meet these standards, then they cannot be used in the state. The RD80905 is compliant with the regulations which means that it’s an environmentally friendly, low emission gas pressure washer.
The Bad
- A little expensive – The Ridgid RD80905 is one of the most expensive models you’ll find until you start moving up into the 4,000 plus psi range which is really getting into the commercial power washer market. However, the RD80905 is one of the best made pressure washers for the home market. So you really get what you pay for here.
- Detergent tank is not built-in – You’ll have to run a separate tube (included) from a bucket of cleaning solution to the pressure washer. This is an extra step over a built-in solution tank, but it works just as well.
